Abstract

Liquid hydrocarbons boiling below 200 DEG C. are freed from aromatic constituents by extraction at a temperature not higher than minus 20 DEG C. with a mixture of liquid sulphur dioxide and liquefied normally gaseous hydrocarbons. In examples, benzine containing aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols and cresols, obtained for example by destructive hydrogenation of coal tar is treated below -40 DEG C. with liquefied ethane or propane mixed with liquid sulphur dioxide. After standing, the extract layer containing a substantially quantitative yield of aromatic substances, is removed, freed from the solvents and distilled to form benzene, toluene and xylene fractions which are free from naphthenes. The aromatic extracts may be used as motor fuels alone or mixed with other motor fuels. Specification 441,104 is referred to.
