Abstract
Mineral oils are separated into their paraffinic and naphthenic components by treating with an anhydrous mixture of crude cresol and a liquid water-repellent solvent, whereby paraffins are removed, and then saturating the extract with water to separate the naphthenic component leaving an aqueous mixture of solvents containing resins, aromatic and asphaltic substances. The major part of the aromatic and resinous fraction may be removed in a pretreatment with a mixture of the solvents containing water whereby a more pure naphthenic fraction is obtained. A mineral lubricating or spindleoil distillate or a residue is treated with three portions of a mixture of cresol containing 10 to 30 per cent by volume of nitrobenzene at or near atmospheric temperature, or the oil is completely dissolved by warming with the solvents and then cooled to separate into layers. After removal of the paraffinic layer the solvent layer is saturated with water by passage through a pump and the naphthenic layer is separated in a centrifuge and the separated naphthenic and paraffinic fractions p are distilled to remove solvent and are finally treated with an adsorbent earth. Final traces of solvent are removed by superheated steam. The naphthenic fraction may be further purified by extraction with anhydrous solvent mixture at a low temperature. The aqueous mixture of solvents is distilled removing water and solvents, leaving an asphaltic oil. Water repellent solvents specified are:--nitrotoluene, nitrobenzene, toluidines, aniline, xylidines, ethyl aniline, dichlorbenzenes, or dichlordiethyl ether. The separation may also be effected by counter-flowing the oil and solvent mixture in a treating tower. Specification 432,249 is referred to.
