Abstract

In treating hydrocarbon mixtures with selective solvents to obtain fractions of differing types or gravities or to separate out wax, the solvent consists wholly or principally of one or more methyl amines and the process is carried out in a closed system, maybe under pressure and/or at lowered temperatures. As auxiliary liquids there may be used liquids which are wholly miscible with methylamine or selectively dissolve components of petroleum; examples are ammonia, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, or other alcohol, water, monoethyl-ether of glycol, ethyl acetate, aniline, and aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. benzol. The substances treated include gasolene, kerosene, lubricating distillates, and petroleum. The amines may be removed from the separated fractions by distillation or by washing, e.g. with water or methanol; in the treatment of gasolene a little may be left in to serve as an anti-detonant. The treatment of lubricating oils reduces the proportion of clay required for decolorizing.
