Abstract
In a mercury cell for electrolysis of alkali chlorides in which the amalgam formed is decomposed with the formation of alkali metal hydroxides, equalization of the current efficiency of the anode and cathode chambers is achieved by connecting a fuel cell or fuel cells in parallel with the cathode of the mercury cell. The hydrogen produced in the cathode chamber may be exhausted via the fuel cell where it is in part consumed.
