Abstract
678,807. Electrolytic production of titanium. SHAWINIGAN WATER & POWER CO. May 11, 1951 [May 12, 1950], No. 11126/51. Class 41. A process for the production of metallic titanium comprises electrolysing a fused mixture containing one or more chlorides of the group consisting of sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium chlorides, together with titanium tetrachloride in an amount less than the electrochemical equivalent of the amount of electricity used, while maintaining the titanium tetrachloride and the cathodic electrolysis products isolated from the atmosphere. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown which comprises a circular cell with a refractory lining 1, an annular anode 2, a circular cathode 3, a fused electrolyte 4, a metallic bell 5 electrically insulated from the cathode, a metallic screen 6 between the anode and cathode, and means 7 for introducing tetrachloride to the space above the cathode electrolyte. The electrolyte may be fused by alternating current the electrodes being immersed in the electrolyte.
