Abstract
831,923. Refining aluminium by electrolysis. ALUMINIUM-INDUSTRIE-A.G. April 2, 1958 [April 3, 1957], No. 10624/58. Class 41. An electrolytic cell for refining aluminium by the three-layer process in which the aluminium forms the cathode layer in which graphite electrodes are immersed is characterized in that the total horizontal cross-sectional area of the graphite electrodes is at least 7% and not more than 40% of the effective horizontal cross-sectional area of the bath, the cathodic layer is at least 10 cms. deep, and the number of electrodes is not less than 12 and not more than 30. Preferred percentages of total electrode area to bath area are 10 to 20, and preferably 14 to 20 electrodes are employed, and the cathode layer should not exceed 30 cms. in depth. The anode metal aluminium should be at least 99.0% pure and currents of not less than 18,000 amps, e.g. up to 100,000 amps, should be employed to obtain aluminium of a purity of 99.998%.
