Abstract

1329483 Hydroquinone UNION CARBIDE CORP 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 26592/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises a method of preparing hydroquinone from phenol by (a) electrolysing an aqueous solution containing 0À5-4% by weight phenol and 1-5% sulphuric acid at 25-100‹ C., a pH of less than 4, an anode D.C. potential of at least +0À9 volts with reference to a saturated calomel electrode, a cathode D.C. potential more negative than +0À4 volts with reference to a saturated calomel electrode, and a current density of at least 4 amperes per square decimetre until up to 50% by weight phenol has been electrolysed to hydroquinone and (b) treating the electrolysed solution with sufficient reducing agent to convert p-benzoquinone to hydroquinone, (c) removing tars and colour bodies, (d) vacuum distilling at a pot temperature of 45-65‹ C. and a pressure of 70 to about 200 ml of mercury until the volume of electrolysed aqueous solution is “ to 1/10 of the original volume, (e) allowing the distilled pot residue to cool until hydroquinone crystallizes out of solution and (f) recovering the crystallized hydroquinone.
