Abstract

1,247,351. Electrolytic polymerization of aromatic compounds. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 28 Nov., 1968 [11 Dec., 1967], No. 56580/68. Heading C5E. [Also in Division C7] To provide a more uniform process providing a high current efficiency the process of Specification 1,136,699 for preparing polymeric aromatic compounds is modified by including in the electrolysed solution comprising a C 6 to C 20 aromatic compound and a ternary complex R : HX: 2AlX 3 , where R is the same or another more basic C 6 to C 20 aromatic compound and X is Cl or Br, free AlCl 3 present at least in saturation amount and maintaining the anode potential (vs. a saturated Cu: CuCl 2 electrode) at 1À15 volts for 2 to 10 minutes initially and then reducing it to 1À05 to 1À10 volts for the remainder of the process. This voltage sequence may be effected by maintaining a current density of 8 to 9 mA/sq.cm. Solid AlCl 3 may be confined within a porous chamber to maintain the presence of free AlCl 3 , permitting continuous operation.
