Abstract
PURPOSE:To considerably increase the yield of a rare earth metal or an alloy of a rare earth metal without changing the structure of the conventional electrolytic cell when the metal or alloy is produced by a molten salt electrolysis method, by providing a plate shape to electrodes, keeping the interval between the electrodes unchanged and maintaining constant current density at all times. CONSTITUTION:For example, an Nd-Fe alloy is produced with molten LiF-NdF3 or LiF-NdF3-Nd2O3 as molten salt and plate-shaped consumable electrodes of graphite and iron as the anode 3 and the cathode 4, respectively. Even when the anode 3 is consumed, the area is practically unchanged and constant current density can be maintained at all the times. Since the interval between the cathode 4 and the anode 3 can be kept unchanged over the principal reaction surfaces set opposite to each other, a uniform electrolytic reaction can be maintained over the entire reaction surfaces. By this invention, the yield of the alloy can be increased by about 10 times without changing the structure of the conventional electrolytic cell.
