Abstract
826,667. Electrolytic deposition of titanium. SPENCE & SONS Ltd., P. Sept. 17, 1956 [June 16, 1955], No. 17370/55. Addition to 713,446. Class 41. High purity titanium is produced by electrolysis under an inert atmosphere of a fused bath consisting of an alkali metal fluotitanate-halide mixture by initially effecting electrolysis at a cell voltage of 3.5 to 8 volts and a cathode current density of 50 to 100 amps./sq. inch until sufficient electricity, typically not more than 10% of the total used for complete deposition, has been passed to ensure removal of a substantial proportion of the impurities of the bath, discarding the resultant initial cathode deposit, and then continuing the electrolysis to give deposits of high purity titanium. Preferably for the second stage fresh cathodes are employed and the bath temperature is between 600‹ and 900‹ C. The cell used may be that described in Specification 775,870 or the diaphragm of that cell may be omitted. The bath employed may consist of 40% by weight of potassium fluotitanate in an equimolar mixture of sodium and potassium chlorides at 750‹ C.
