Abstract
770,252. Electrolytic processes. METALLGES AKT.-GES. and DEUTSCHE GALDUND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT VORM. ROESSLER. May 23, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 14846/55. Class 41. [Also in Group XL (a)] Lithium having a reduced content of lithium 6 is prepared by electrolysing molten lithium chloride at 650‹ C. between graphite electrodes 1, 2 at a current density of 9 amperes per square centimetre in a U- shaped vessel, in which the anode space is separated from the cathode space by a long diaphragm comprising tightly packed quartz powder 3. Lithium chloride having a reduced content of lithium 6 is obtained in the anode space. The chlorine produced in the anode space is removed at 4 and chlorine is introduced at 5 into the cathode space. The chlorine formed at the anode may be recycled to the cathode, to reform lithium chloride at the latter, whereby a deposition of lithium is avoided.
