Abstract
713,432. Electrolytic production of chromium. WEIL, W. M. Feb. 5, 1951, [Feb. 16, 1950; Dec. 16, 1950.] No. 2774/51. Class 4 I. A process for producing chromium electrolytically from a fused bath containing chromium chloride comprises the steps of electrolyzing the fused salt bath in a closed heat-resistant metal alloy pot 10 forming the cathode of the cell, the upper portion of the side wall of the pot being constructed to provide an upper inner surface 12 that is relatively inert to chemical attack, and continuously during electrolysis maintaining the surface of the fused bath above the lower edge of said inner surface, and introducing a stream of hydrogen gas into the fused salt bath. The bath may consist substantially entirely of alkali metal chloride and chromium chloride in the chrome or chromous state. In the arrangement shown the anode comprises a tube 15 of graphite through which hydrogen is supplied to the electrolyte. The apparatus used is described in Specification 713,518.
