Abstract
692,218. Batteries. LUCAS, O. D. Nov. 6, 1951 [Nov. 8, 1950], No. 27355/50. Class 53. The output of an electrolytic cell is raised by introducing hydrogen peroxide into the electrolyte. In a cell comprising rustless steel and magnesium plates, the electrolyte, magnesium chloride is pumped continuously through the cell together with a solution of hydrogen peroxide. It is found that the cell opencircuit voltage and temperature both rise. No explanation of the action is offered and it is stated that the cell output can be controlled by adjustment of the rate of feed of the hydrogen peroxide. The method may be adopted with cells using aluminium and carbon electrodes with an electrolyte of caustic soda and it has been found advantageous to add hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride.
