Abstract
877,896. Batteries; electrolytic cells. TUDOR A.B. Oct. 2, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1968], No. 33522/59. Classes 41 and 53. A battery cell is provided internally with an open-ended electrolytic cell 1 immersed in the battery electrolyte. When current is passed between the electrodes 2, 3 of the cell the gases evolved pass up the tube 1 which terminates below the level 9 of the electrolyte. In Fig. 1 the tube 1 is provided with a constriction 10 to enable large gas bubbles to be formed which fill the tube so that when they loosen and rise they lift the electrolyte above them and thus stir and cause circulation of the electrolyte. The same result may be obtained by making the tube 1 of a sufficiently small bore, or by forming its upper part of reduced diameter as shown in Fig. 5. The current for the cell may be obtained from the battery in which it is enclosed or from an outside source. A switch may be provided to disconnect the electrodes 2, 3 when the battery is being charged. Several electrolytic cells may be mounted in the battery as shown, for example in Fig. 3 in which cells 1 are mounted between parts of the positive electrodes 10.
