Abstract
An electrolytic cell for use in the production of sodium chlorate, sodium hypochlorite and <PICT:1104078/C6-C7/1> sodium perchlorate from an aqueous solution of sodium chloride comprises a metallic container 1 for electrolyte which forms the cathode, an anode 2 having an outer surface of lead dioxide supported within the container 1 in spaced relation to the inner walls thereof, an electrically non-conductive member 6, e.g. of polypropylene or polymethyl methacrylate, which closes the upper end of the container and through which the anode 2 projects, an outlet 11 for the flow of gas and electrolyte from the container and an electrolyte inlet 12 at the lower part of the container. The anode 2 may be formed of graphite coated with lead dioxide. The member 3 closing the base of the container 1 may be formed of plastic and may have means 13 for draining the container. Electrolyte is circulated upwards through the cell by the action of the hydrogen gas and the heat produced in the electrolytic process. External circuitry Fig. 4 (not shown) may connect the outlets 11 of a plurality of cells arranged in parallel with a gas outlet and with a feeder tank, the feeder tank being also connected with the inlets 12 of the cells.
