Abstract

An equiaxed crystalline coating of aluminium is formed on a steel base by cleaning the base of oxide, heating it to a temperature of 700 DEG -800 DEG F., and then exposing it to aluminium vapours in high vacuum. The process is particularly applicable to steels having tensile strengths over 200,000 p.s.i.; one given by way of example contains C 0,4%, Cr 5%, Mo 1,3% and V 0,5%. The aluminium coating preferably has a thickness between 0,5 and 5 mils, and may subsequently be anodised.
