Abstract
Titanium and titanium-base alloys are descaled by immersion in molten alkali metal hydroxide into which steam is passed. Sodium hydroxide may be used at 400 DEG -450 DEG C and the steam passed continuously or intermittently. The descaled metal may become covered with a black film which can be removed by pickling in hydrofluoric acid solution.
