Abstract
A high-speed or air hardening steel having a secondary hardening range up to 620 DEG C. or an alloy steel having a tempering range up to 620 DEG C. is heated in the presence of a heat-dissociable iodide of the coating metal at between 200 DEG and 650 DEG C. Cr, Mo, W, V, Si and Al are specified as coating metals.
