Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials are dyed with vat dyestuffs by impregnating the material with an aqueous suspension of an acid leuco vat dyestuff produced by treating an aqueous suspension of the vat dyestuff with thiourea dioxide at elevated temperature and under neutral or acid conditions and, while the dyestuff in the material is in the acid leuco form, treating the material with an alkaline liquor so as to convert the dyestuff in the material to the alkaline leuco form. Fixation of the dyestuff is preferably completed by passing the material through a molten metal bath, as described for example in Specification 620,584, in which case the alkaline treating liquor, e.g. caustic soda solution or a solution of caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite, floats on the molten metal at the entry to the bath. The acid leuco vat dyestuff suspension, prepared for example by heating an aqueous liquor containing the vat dyestuff, thiourea dioxide and disodium hydrogen orthophosphate, is preferably applied from a padding mangle. The process may also be applied in association with those described in Specifications 661,086, 663,066, 665,454 and 681,983. Examples are given.
