Abstract

Textile materials are dyed by impregnating them with a mixture of a vat dyestuff and an alkali metal bisulphite and thereafter treating the material with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or quaternary ammonium borohydride and an alkali metal hydroxide having a pH between 9,5 and 13. The dye and bisulphite may be applied by padding as an aqueous dispersion and the material may be dried at 110 DEG C. for 1-2 hours prior to reduction. The reducing bath may also contain sodium chloride and is advantageously used at 80 DEG C. for a contact time of 5 seconds. Specified borohydrides are tetramethyl-, trimethylethyl-, dimethyldiethyl-, tricaprylmethyl- and cetyltrimethyl-ammonium borohydride and especially sodium borohydride. Examples of dyeing cotton with a number of well known vat dyestuffs are given. Specification 872,998 is referred to.
