Abstract
In the dyeing of aromatic polyester textiles with vat dyestuffs, a dyebath containing a vat dyestuff, thiourea dioxide, a protective colloid, such as gelatine, a carrier, such as o- or p-phenyl phenol, a chlorinated phenol or a chlorinated hydrocarbon, and a buffer, such as disodium hydrogen phosphate, is heated gradually to 90 DEG C., or over, after the textile has been introduced, this temperature then being maintained until the polyester fibres have been dyed with the free leuco derivative of the vat dyestuff, whereupon the textile is removed and the reduced dyestuff reoxidized with, for example, hydrogen peroxide. When mixtures of polyester and cellulose fibres are dyed, the dyebath is made alkaline by the addition of caustic soda after the polyester fibres have been dyed with the free leuco derivative, whereupon the alkali leuco derivative so-formed then dyes the cellulose fibres. Examples are given in which the dyebath also contains dispersing agents, viz.:-sodium lauryl sulphate and the disodium salt of methylene dinaphthalene sulphonic acid.
