Abstract

Cellulosic materials are treated to form within them a fine dispersion of a vat dyestuff by causing an acid leuco vat dye, with which the material is impregnated, to oxidize to the vat dye, the acid leuco vat having been prepared by reducing the vat dye with thiourea dioxide. The material may be impregnated with a suspension of pre-formed acid leuco vat dye prepared by reducing the vat dye in the presence of alkali with thiourea dioxide and subsequently acidifying. A dispersing agent may be present. In a modification, the material is impregnated with a suspension of vat dye and thiourea dioxide and the acid leuco vat dye is formed in situ by heating the material to at least 80 DEG C in the presence of moisture. In either case, the material containing the vat dye dispersed therein is then dyed by alkaline reduction of the dye to fix it on the materials; sodium hydrosulphite may be used for this reduction. In Examples (1), (2) and (3), cotton, linen or spun rayon-wool cloth is impregnated with an acid leuco vat dye prepared with thiourea dioxide, and the material then developed in a bath containing sodium hydrosulphite or thiourea dioxide and finieshed in the usual way; (4), (5) and (6) spun rayon, rayon-wool or cotton cloth is padded with a composition containing thiourea dioxide and a vat dye together with a dyeing assistant and a thickener, steamed at 100 DEG C with saturated steam, and the dyeing developed by means of alkaline hydrosulphite. Specifications 702,040 and 702,041 are referred to.
