Abstract

In the continuous dyeing of textile materials by impregnation, e.g. passing, with aqueous vat or sulphur dyestuff liquor, the dyestuff, an alkali solvent for the dyestuff, water and thiourea dioxide (or a mixture of thiourea and an oxidizing agent) are brought together just prior to the impregnating operation, the impregnation is effected at a temperature not above 25 DEG C. and the impregnated material is then heated to at least 70 DEG C. to effect reduction of the dyestuff. Specified oxidizing agents when a mixture of thiourea and an oxidizing agent is employed are hydrogen peroxide, sodium peroxide and sodium hypochlorite. Heating is effected by passing the material through steam, molten metal or hot oil or first through steam and then through molten metal. A reaction accelerator, such as ammonium or alkali metal molybdates and vanadates, alkali metal tungstates and ceric sulphate, may be added to the impregnating liquor. When using molten metal for heating, as described, for example, in Specifications 620,584 and 665,454, a reducing liquor may also float on the metal surface where the material enters. The pad box may be cooled. The process is applicable to the dyeing of textiles of cotton, rayon, nylon, polyesters and polyacrylonitrile.
