782,007. Metal melting furnaces. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 3, 1954], No. 34280/55. Class 51 (2). An aluminium melting furnace comprises a melting section 10 in the form of a shallow hearth 11 with a bridge wall 12, an upwardly extending combustion space 20 fired by a pair of pulverized coal burners 35, and a holding section 30 having a storage hearth 25 disposed below a suspended roof 26 defining an outlet 27 for waste gases from the melting section and an outlet 28 for waste gases from any auxiliary burners in the holding section. The latter may also be heated electrically. Pulverized coal and primary air pass through pipes 36 from each end of a distributer 37 to the burners 35, which are supplied through pipes 41 with secondary air from a main 42. The flame and combustion gases leaving the burners take a U-shaped flow path in the combustion space and over the hearth to the flue 31, alleviating hydrogen occlusion by the metal. Scrap or metal pig is charged through the door 15 and an exterior duct 39 conducts molten metal into the hearth 25 which has a valve-controlled discharge conduit leading to casting apparatus.
