Abstract
571,906. Metal melting furnaces. MIDLAND MOTOR CYLINDER CO., Ltd., and WOOLLEY, F. A. Feb. 9, 1944, No. 2436. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group II] Borings, turnings or like finely-divided metal particles to be melted are charged on to a bed of incandescent fuel supported on the refractory bottom 23 of a furnace chamber 10, the products of incomplete combustion from this bed passing off below the metal through an opening 28 to a vertical flue 27 to be re-admitted at 32 to the upper end of the furnace where they are burnt with secondary air supplied at 34 to produce a hot zone above the metal. Preheated primary air is delivered to the fuel bed through rows of tuyeres 24 arranged in the side walls of the furnace and connected to a conduit 25 to which hot air is supplied from a heating coil 40 in the chimney flue 38. The conduit 25 may also supply the pipe 33 delivering the secondary air to the inlet 34. The molten metal and slag run down into a well 14 provided with the usual tapping holes and closed at the bottom by a pair of hinged doors 16, 17. The refractory bottom 23 slopes gently down to the well 14 and may consist of sand supported on hinged drop-down doors 21, 22.
