Abstract

932,177. Metal melting furnaces; discharging molten metals. SCOTTISH GAS BOARD. May 14, 1962 [April 15, 1961], No. 13655/61. Class 51 (2). [Also in Groups XIII and XXII] A melting and holding furnace for aluminium or alloys thereof comprises a gas-fired melting chamber 11 separated from a holding chamber 12 by a bridge wall 13, the holding chamber being heated by a pair of U-shaped tubes 18 and 19 immersed in molten lead 17 over which floats the molten aluminium. Tube 18 is fired by gas and tube 19 is supplied with hot waste gases extracted at 15 from the melting chamber 11. Nitrogen supplied at 20 and vented at 21 is used to drive the molten metal through spaced outlets 12A to successive feed pockets 24 and 27 connected by ducts 23 to holding pots 22 feeding die-casting machines. Each feed pocket 27 and holding pot 22 has the molten lead base 32 and a U-shaped, gas-fired tube 33 and each pocket 24 and 27 and holding pot 22 also has feed pipes 34 and relief pipes 35 for nitrogen. Each duct 23 includes a rising inner graphite tube 36 enclosed by an aluminised steel tube 37 heated by gas burner 40 and enclosed in a refractory housing 38 with a flue 44. The graphite tube 36 is secured at 46 to the steel tube 37, the other end being free to allow of differential expansion. The furnaces and conduits may be oil-fired or heated by electric elements, and automatic temperature control of the various parts may be installed.
