Abstract

A stabilizing or dispersing agent is prepared by forming an aqueous mixture of from one to four parts by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide and from one to twenty parts by weight of a carboniferous mineral such as peat or lignite which contains at least 10 per cent by weight of humic acid, the mix being digested for at least 15 minutes at 75 DEG to 90 DEG C. and then heated to dryness at from 150 DEG to 130 DEG C. The dry product is ground to a suitable size. Tannins such as quebracho extract and, in some cases, lime, may be added to the composition before drying.ALSO:A stabilizing agent for adding to Portland cement mixtures is prepared by forming an aqueous mixture of from one to four parts by weight of an alkyl metal hydroxide and from one to twenty parts by weight of carboniferous mineral such as peat or lignite which contains at least 10 per cent by weight of humic acid, the mix being digested for at least 15 minutes at 75 DEG to 90 DEG C and then heated to dryness at from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. The dry product is ground to a suitable size. Tannins such as quebracho extract and, in some cases lime, may be added to the composition before drying.
