Abstract

707,131. Valve-gear. OWENS, J. I., BRA MMER, W., and DANIEL, D. J. R. April 13, 1950 [April 14, 1949], No. 10241/49. Class 7 (6) Inlet and exhaust valves 6, 8 are opened and closed by the application of hydraulic or pneumatic fluid from a pump 23 to pistons 12 attached to the valve stems 9 under the control of a distributer 16 which directs the fluid first to one side of the piston to open the valves and then to the other side to close them, the fluid on the side opposite to that to which the fluid pressure is so directed being released by the distributer to the admission side of the pump 23. As shown, excess hydraulic fluid is supplied under pressure to the distributer 16 by a rotary pump 23 from a reservoir 25 integral with the pump, the excess being returned to reservoir 25 through a by-pass valve arranged in the pump or distributer body and controlled in accordance with engine speed or by the throttle valve control so that the pressure increases with increasing engine speed or throttle valve opening. The distributer is preferably similar to that of Specification 701,963. The lengths of the valve stems 9 are adjustable by screw means 22, and the valve-operating cylinders 13 are formed in a single block 19 which is attached to the cylinder head 10. The shaft 23a driving the pump 23 and distributer 16 also drives a lubricating oil pump 3.
