Class 122(i) [Also in Group XXXIV] A device for supplying a predetermined amount of lubricant with the aid of air under pressure at one or more points between the uppermost and lowermost piston rings of a piston is characterised in that it comprises a chamber communicating with a lubricant supply duct, and a duct for intermittently supplying air under pressure connected to said chamber, which chamber is in communication with the interior of the cylinder by means of a channel. In each cylinder a chamber formed in the wall 4 of the cylinder by a copper packing ring 10 is connected by a sloping passage 15 to the cylinder bore and is supplied with oil through a non- return valve 13 and a passage 14 and with air through a non-return valve 11 and a passage 12, from a rotary distributing valve comprising a hollow valve 17, Fig. 2, the interior of which is supplied with air under pressure from a connection 18 and which is driven from the engine through gearing 22, 23. The valve has ports 19, 20 which communicate with outlets to the valves 11 of each cylinder. The relative speed of rotation of the valve 17 may be altered by means of the gearing to vary the supply relative to the engine speed. The piston 5 is formed .with a groove 6 between piston rings 7 having rounded edges, into which the oil is injected from the passage 15.
