Abstract
673,994. Valves. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. Sept. 30, 1949 [Oct. 1, 1948], No. 25165/49. Class 7(vi) In a mutlicylinder engine three adjacent cylinders are controlled by two flat rotary valves rotating in a plane perpendicular to the cylinder axes. In a six-cylinder in-line engine, Fig, 1, two.flat valves d controlling cylinders 1-3 are arranged so that each valve controls both the inlet and exhaust of one cylinder and either the inlet or exhaust of another cylinder. The axes of the valves are arranged in line and they are driven at one quarter crankshaft speed by gearing from a single shaft parallel to the crankshaft. Symmetrical and interchangeable cylinder heads are fitted over each set of three cylinders, and the inlet and exhaust ports of each cylinder are sealed by sleeves t, Fig. 3, carrying piston rings. In an alternative arrangement one valve controls two cylinders and the second valve controls the third cylinder only.
