465,384. Reversing; valve gear. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. April 21, 1936, No. 11370. Convention date, April 27, 1935. [Classes 7 (v) and 7 (vi)] To enable an engine to be rapidly reversed by means of compressed air, one or more valves 50 for discharging compressed air from the engine cylinders at the end of the compression stroke are pneumatically controlled by an engine-driven distributer 32 for compressed air. As shown, the distributer 32 is a rotary valve driven from a rotary enginedriven distributer 9, supplying compressed air through pipes 10 to starting-air valves 1 on the engine cylinders. The supply of compressed air to the distributer 9 and the valves 1 is controlled by a hand-actuated main air valve 4. The distributer 9 is moved axially for reversing by a control lever 13 and .linkage 16, and a lost-motion connection 33, 34 between the valves 9, 32 allows relative angular adjustment of the valve 32 on reversal. Each of the discharge valves 50, Fig. 3, comprises a valve member 52, the stem 57 of which carries a piston 59 engaged by a spring 58 tending to close the valve, which is opened by compressed air supplied from the valve 32 through a pipe 49 to the upper side of the piston 59. The spring 58 allows the valve 52 to open on excess pressure in the cylinder during normal running. Specification 289,304, [Class 7 (v)], is referred to.
