Abstract
697,584. Vehicle couplings. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES. Dec. 19, 1951, No. 29751/51. Class 103 (v). The knuckle 8 of a Janney-type coupler is pivoted on a pin 9 and is normally supported on a boss 6 integral with the bottom ear 4 of the coupler head. When wear of the surfaces 16, 18 takes place the surface 19 contacts the substantially, flat face 21 on the ear 4 to give additional bearing surface but also to increase the force required to move the knuckle. The flat face 21 is stepped downwardly at 24 to prevent the formation of a.shoulder on the top side of the ear 4 up which the knuckle would have to ride when it is being opened.
