Abstract
554,994. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. STEVENS, A. H. (American Steel Foundries). March 17, 1942, No. 3563. [Class 103 (v)] Automatic car couplers comprise coupler heads, as shown in Fig. 1, each having a pivoted lock 32, which in coupling abuts a similar lock on the mating coupler, as shown in Fig. 9, the locks 32 being pivotally mounted in a projecting nose 12. A lock-operating lever 46, carrying a spring 48 for acting upon the lock 32, is pivoted to the lock 32, as shown in Fig. 11, and serves by engagement of a notch 76 thereon in a recess formed in the mating coupler to hold the lock 32 from creeping out of engagement with the abutting lock. A second notch 74 on the upper edge of the releasing lever enables its use as a lock-set for the lock of the mating coupler when uncoupling.
