Abstract
199,635. White, A. E., (National Malleable Castings Co.). Aug. 15, 1922. Couplings, automatic. -In a Janney coupling, the lock operating-gear comprises a link 9 pivoted to the lock and having a recess 17 in its upper end in which works a stop 16 fixed to the upper link 8. In the locked position of the coupling, Fig. 1, the links can only take up the position shown, in which the link 9 underlies a portion of the coupler head to prevent creeping of the lock. The lugs on the coupler head which take the knuckle hinge-pin D are provided with upstanding ribs 21<b> which engage in corresponding recesses 20<b> on the knuckle so as to take the lateral as well as direct stress from the pin D when the coupling is in draught or buffing. Flats on the ribs 21b engage corresponding flats in the recesses 20b to limit the swing of the knuckle. The lower lug of the coupler is extended downwardly under the hinge-pin to take a flat pin 28 which supports the pin D from below. Fig. 3 shows the lock 2 in its " lock set " position in which the lock has been raised by hand until the stem 3 of the lock rests on the ledge 31 of the coupler head. When the knuckle B is pulled open, the tail of the knuckle passes under the lock body 2 and unseats the leg 3 from the ledge 31 so that it drops into the groove 33. When automatic coupling occurs the tail of the knuckle pushes the leg 3 of the lock down the groove 33 until it enters the hole 30 in the bottom of the coupler, when the body 2 of the lock drops between the tail of the knuckle B and the guard arm side of the coupler A. A vertical V-shaped recess 24, Fig. 5, is provided on the guard arm side of the coupler behind which the body 2 of the lock engages so that the lock will not be dragged out of .its cavity in the coupler head under excessive draught.
