Abstract
217,167. National Malleable Castings Co., (Assignees of Willison, J.). June 9, 1923, [Convention date]. Couplings, automatic, convertible to non-automatic.-An automatic coupling having rigid jaws has a non-automatic coupling member pivoted to it and depending therefrom when in lowered position, the member when under draft having a draft arm engaging portions of the coupler and adapted to transmit draft therethrough, the draft arm carrying a connection for coupling with a coupler of a different type. A pin 11 is pivoted in the coupler head 2 and has its head 12 bent twice at right-angles and carries a draft arm 15 which houses a ball socket 21 screwed to take the tightening screw 9 of the link 25. In non- automatic coupling the draft arm 15 is raised from below the coupler and placed within the rigid jaw 17 and lock 5 of the automatic coupler head so as to take the draft stresses. In non- automatic coupling the end of the screw 9 is housed in a cavity in the automatic coupler head, and in buffing the arm 15 drops clear of the automatic coupler head, the end of the screw 9 remaining in the cavity so that on the resumption of draft the arm 15 re-engages with the automatic coupler head.
