Abstract
853,244. Transitional couplings for railway vehicles. HILGER, D., and BUSCH, W., [trading as BERGISCHE STAHL-INDUSTRIE.]. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 13, 1956], No. 31878/57. Class 103(5). A transitional coupling mechanism has an automatic coupling head 2 with a hole therethrough for the passage of a guide horn 19 on an opposite coupling, into this hole a member 6 pivoted on a pin 4 may be swung when connection is to be made between the links 16, 17 on the member 6 and a hook 18 on another truck. The pin 4 has a flat on its side which co-operates with a bolt urged by a spring 26, so that when the member 6 is not in use it may be held inoperative as shown in Fig. 1. To couple with the hook 18 the member 6 is swung to overcome the resistance of the spring 26, and then moved into the hole in the head 2 until a nose 7 engages behind a coupling bolt 9 and another nose 20 covers the front of the bolt. The link 17 is then dropped into the hook 18 and moved back by tightening a nut 15 until the eye 12 fits into a socket 14, in which position the usual side buffers are partly compressed. A tube for air and so on lines, Fig. 3 (not shown), is rigidly fixed on the member 6 and carries an automatic coupling at one end and a hand coupling at the other. In the operative position the automatic air line coupling is pressed against an automatic coupling on the head 2, and the air line of the other vehicle is connected to the hand coupling.
