Abstract
663,607. Automatic couplings for railway vehicles. AMERICAN STEEL FOUNDRIES March 15, 1950, No. 6496/50. Class 103(v) An automatic coupler for a railway car comprising a head 1 having a cavity in which there is pivoted and supported a knuckle 3 having a tail portion 11 is characterized in that the top surface 22 of the bottom pulling lug 15 of the coupler head is inclined downwardly and outwardly of the coupler head and by engaging a similar inclined surface 21 of the underside of the tail portion of the knuckle serves to support the tail portion after the knuckle has seated at 10 around its pivot pin 4. The coupler is so constructed that the clearance 20 between the bottom lug 13 of the knuckle tail and the bottom wall 17 is greater in any position of the knuckle than the clearance 19 between the surfaces 21 and 22. When wear takes place the surfaces 21, 22 contact in the closed position of the knuckle which is thereby supported but move apart immediately on opening the knuckle to reduce the resistance to opening thereof.
