Couplings, automatic. - An automatic coupling of the pivoted knuckle type in which the drawhead is provided with a lock-set seat for a locking block on its inner side wall, and in which the knuckle has a tail with which the locking block co-operates, the locking block having a lateral shoulder at an intermediate portion of its height, is characterized in that the drawhead is provided with a bearing surface 310, Fig. 12, for the lateral shoulder 28 of the locking block, the bearing surface being located in the lower portion of the corner of the drawhead and bounded by the front and side walls thereof. The knuckle 19, Fig. 6, is recessed around the knuckle pinhole so that the projecting surfaces 21, 18 surround bosses on the drawhead when the knuckle is closed to absorb part of the buffing and draught) stresses respectively of the pin. The tail 21 of the knuckle is provided on its upper edge with a rib 23, and on its undersurface with a rib 123. The coupling is unlocked by pulling the rod 34, Fig. 1, so that the toe of the lever 33 engages the inclined; portion 27 of the extension 25 of the locking block. The block 24 rises until clear of the tail 22, it then tilts and engages the lock-set seat 31, but should it not tilt sufficiently, continued movement of the lever 33 forces the rib 26 of the block under the rib 123 of the tail 22 until the block is above the lock-set seat 31 if the lever 33 is then released the block will settle down on to its lock-set seat. If the knuckle is opened by means other than the lever 33 the tail rib 23 engages the shoulder 28 of the locking block and tilts it away from the seat 31, the tilting movement being limited by the rib 26 of the block engaging a rib 35 on the drawhead. If the knuckle is to be opened by the lever 33 a continued pull on the rod 24 elevates the block so that the rib 26 on the block engages the rib 123 on the knuckle tail and forcibly throws the knuckle to its open position. During this movement the upper end of the block will tilt rearwardly through the lip 29 on the block engaging the inclined surface 302 on the drawhead; this tilting action throws the knuckle open to the limit of its travel.
