689,480. Cylinders; valve-gear. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Aug. 3, 1950 [Aug. 3, 1949], No. 19467/50. Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii) and 7 (vi). A spherical or ellipsoidal or flat-based partspherical or part-ellipsoidal combustion chamber 10 having obliquely and oppositely mounted poppet inlet and exhaust side-valves 2, 3 opening radially thereto has a restricted connection 14 to the cylinder 1. As shown, the base of a hemispherical chamber 10 is formed by a flat cover 11 in which is centrally mounted a spark plug 12 or. injection nozzle. The valves 2. 3 are hollowed to conform to the contours of the chamber 10, and are operated from cam-shafts (not shown) either directly by oscillating levers or by push-rods 6 and levers 5. the piston head may be crowned as shown, or frusto-conical so as to reach nearly to the chamber 10, the cylinder head being correspondingly shaped in each case. The inlet and exhaust passages 8, 9 are in alignment.
