684,873. Cylinders; combustion chambers for direct-injection engines. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. Aug. 3, 1950 [Aug. 3, 1949], No'. 19469/50. Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii). A cylinder head 5 whose base seats on an inclined joint surface of a cylinder 1 contains poppet-type, inlet and. exhaust, valves having axes substantially perpendicular to the base and seat-. ings substantially in the plane thereof with their centres spaced apart in the direction of the cylinder axis, e.g. two valves situated in the line of greatest slope of the joint surface. One valve 6, which may be either the inlet or exhaust valve, is concave to form'with a portion 11 of the piston head a, substantially hemi-spherical combus-. tion chamber 10 the base of which is formed by a portion of the cylinder wall, contains centrally a spark plug 12 or injection nozzle, and may be either a flat or conical inwardly inclined part 2<SP>1</SP>, or merely a; cylinder bore extension. Fig,. 1 (not shown), when the valves are of.large diameter. The remaining portion 11a of the piston head screens the lower valve. The valves may be operated through levers from a single overhead camshaft, or hydraulically, pneumatically or electrically operated, and provision may be made for hydraulic fake-up of play. Inlet and exhaust passages 8, 9 may be arranged symmetrically about a plane perpendicular to the cylinder head base or may both extend from the same side of the head.
