Abstract
608,729. Combustion chambers. CHAPMAN, C. W. Feb. 28, 1946, No. 6291. [Class 7 (iii)] A fuel-injection compression-ignition internalcombustion engine is of the kind having a combustion chamber 5. situated above and to one side of the cylinder space, and is characterised in that the transfer passage 3 between them is of the greatest cross-sectional area where it enters the cylinder, has the wall surface 2 furthest from the cylinder axis inclined towards that axis and towards the wall surface 1 nearest to it, has the wall 1 inclined to the axis at an angle less than 60 degrees, and has both walls tangential to the chamber 5, the arrangement being such as to produce special air flow when the piston is nearing top dead-centre. During these latter stages of compression, owing to the "squish" action along the under face of the cylinder head, most of the air tends to flow horizontally across the opening of the passage 3. Some however will move into the opening in an eddying manner as shown at b. A higher pressure will thus develop at x than at y. This causes some of the air passing up the wall 2 at x to be reflected in the direction a to y. The two opposing streams a, b, produce a pocket of quiescent and hotter air at y, into which a fuel jet A, from a nozzle 4, is sprayed. The nozzle is arranged to spray another jet B into the chamber.
