Abstract
640,973. Brushes. HOLLINS BRUSH CO., Ltd., and EDWARDS, W. March 9, 1948, No. 7214. [Class 19] A brush is made by securing in the butt end of the bristles a wedge, having an upwardly projecting spike or spikes on to which the handle is forced inside a ferrule in which the bristles and spike(s) are secured. In the Figure, the bristles 5 are secured in a metal ferrule 4. At the butt end the bristles 5 are divided and a wedge 6, made of metal, and having upwardly projecting spikes 7 with downwardly projecting teeth 8, is inserted. The butt end of the bristles 5 with the wedge 6 in place is secured in the ferrule 4 by rubber or cement or other adhesive substance and the handle 9 is then forced into the open end of the ferrule 4, the spikes 7 entering the handle and the teeth 8 preventing its withdrawal. If desired; the edges of the ferrule engaging the bristles may be slightly curved or inturned to grip the bristles more tightly or the inside face of the ferrule may be slightly tapered to narrow it at the lower end.
