632,130. Soaking-pit furnaces. SUMMERS & SONS, Ltd., J., and JONES, J. F. R. Jan. 29, 1948, No. 2643. [Class 51 (ii] A soaking-pit or like furnace is formed with an exhaust chamber 7 between the treatment chamber 1 and a flue 11 through which the waste gases are discharged, the end of the chamber which opens into the treatment chamber having a relatively large cross-sectional area and the opposite end being. closed except for the flue inlet, the arrangement being such that no local increases in the velocity of the hot. gases are created within the treatment zone under the influence of the suction existing at the flue inlet and the charge is thus heated uniformly. In the furnace shown, the inner end of the chamber 7 extends across the full width of the treatment chamber and its side walls taper towards the flue. The arched roof 13 of the chamber is located approximately half way between the charging opening and a removable hearth 3, and forms the lower wall of a combustion chamber 8 fired by three burners 16. The flue 11 communicates with a stack through an outlet controlled by a damper 12. In use, the work pieces 2 are charged on to the hearth to a height not exceeding that of the roof 13 so that the flames do not impinge directly thereon.
