Abstract

621,436. Switching systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRIEDLANDER, E. S. Feb. 25, 1947, No. 5479. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A load 13, such as an electric water heater, is disconnected from the A.C. supply 12 by a slight lowering of the frequency and may be connected up again by raising the frequency. In the arrangement shown a relay similar to that described in Specification 613,856 is used. The coil 15 and condenser 18 are in resonance for the normal frequency, but frequencies above or below this cause the armature 9 to rotate one way or the other to operate a mercury switch 14. Minor modifications, allowing the frequency at which response occurs to be adjusted, comprise shunting a few turns of the coil 15 with a resistance over which moves a tapping connected to a condenser terminal, dividing the coil 15 into two movable parts, providing a movable magnetic shunt for the poles 5 and 7, and providing compensation windings acting in opposition to coils 16a and 16b to reduce vibration.
