Abstract

631,696. Control of A.C. motors; electromagnetic switches. TURNER, Ltd., E. R. & F., LEGGETT, P. A., and PAYNE, C. F. E. May 31, 1947, Nos.14478/47 and 15153/48. [Classes 38(iii) and 38(v)] In a control system for a split phase A.C. motor an electromagnetic switch effecting the change from starting to running connections has an armature which as well as switching in or out the starting winding switches in or out a part of the magnet exciting winding. On starting, the armature 4 is attracted to complete the circuit of the starting winding and short circuit a section of its exciting winding 8. The armature is retracted by a spring 5 after starting. The winding 8 may be connected for voltage operation, as in Fig. 3 for example. In another embodiment excitation is reduced by a reversely wound portion of the exciting winding. The invention may be used with resistance, inductance or capacitor phase splitting, and with capactior motors.
