Abstract

654,225. Control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, F. E. March 4, 1946, No. 6655/48. [Class 38 (iii)] A control circuit for a direct-current motor, having an armature A, series field winding B, and auxiliary shunt field winding C, includes a plurality of series starting resistors which are adapted to be shortcircuited in turn to accelerate the motor in stages. A contactor 7 is connected in series in the shunt field circuit and is adapted to be opened after the last resistor has been short-circuited to achieve further acceleration of the motor as the shunt excitation decreases. A time-delay relay coil 9c is connected in parallel with the shunt field and is adapted to open its normally-closed armature contacts when the shunt field is energized to prevent the closing of a contact 9 in series with resistor R6, which is placed across the field winding B, the time-delay being sufficient to keep the armature contacts open until the voltage across the shunt field winding has been reduced substantially to zero. Closure of contact 10 completes the full accelerating sequence. The short-circuiting of the series starting resistors may be effected by current limit relays having coils connected across certain of the resistors. Dynamic braking is instituted by the closing of a contact 6.
