Systems for alternating-current motors only; automatic starters.-In an automatic starter for a synchronous motor A, switches 1, 2 for applying reduced voltage to the motor armature are closed first; afterwards a switch 5 for applying full voltage to the armature and a switch 6 for connecting the motor field F to a battery B are closed m succession under the control of a retarded re- ]a<y> device 8 the contacts of which can be adjusted in position so as to alter the timing or order of succession. The whole sequence of operations is subject to a curernt-limit relay 11. Resistance R<l> is automatically short-circuited across the field winding during the first stage of starting.
