Abstract

388,502. Master control of A. C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of McLenegan, D. W. ; 1686, Rugby Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 23, 1931, No. 32427. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1930. [Class 38 (iii).] To start a motor, voltages below normal, above normal, below normal, and normal, are applied to the armature winding in succession. Upon closure of a switch 10 a switch 4 is closed which connects the motor 1 to the supply with part of the windings of an autotransformer 2 acting as a series choke. After a time interval a relay 13 closes to close a switch 3, so that the motor is supplied with a voltage above normal. After a further time a relay 16 opens its contacts 17 and closes its contacts 18, so that the relay 13 and switch 3 open, and the initial motor connections are re-established. Upon opening of the switch 3 a switch 7 is closed to connect the motor directly to the supply. A field switch 9 is closed when a centrifugally operated switch 21 closes, provided that the switch 7 has been closed. The switch 9 may close independently of the switch 7, and may have auxiliary contacts in the circuit of the coil of the relay 16, so that it must close before the abnormal voltage is applied.
