Abstract
6-Cyclohexylphenol-4-sulphonic acid is prepared by sulphonating phenol with strong sulphuric acid to form phenol-4-sulphonic acid, and then heating this compound with cyclohexene or cyclohexanol, preferably in the presence of sulphuric acid or other condensing agent such as phosphorus pentoxide, phosphoric acid, a mixture of boric and oxalic acids, or an activated fuller's earth. The 6-cyclohexylphenol-4-sulphonic acid so obtained may easily be converted into 2 : 4-dinitro-6-cyclohexylphenol by the action of nitric acid. In a preferred form of carrying out the invention, phenol is sulphonated with strong sulphuric acid. To the solution thus obtained cyclohexene is then added, and finally without isolation of the intermediate products, nitric acid is added and from the product the final 2 : 4-dinitro-6-cyclohexylphenol isolated. The process may also be used to form 6-cyclohexylphenol by subjecting to steam distillation the condensation product of phenol-4-sulphonic acid and cyclohexene. Detailed examples are given.
