Abstract
Dichloracetic acid is produced by heating pentachlorethane with sulphuric acid of 88--99 per cent strength preferably at 130--170 DEG C. Water or diluted sulphuric acid is preferably added as required to prevent the concentration of the sulphuric acid becoming too high. The reaction mixture may be poured upon ice, the unreacted pentachlorethane poured off, and the dichloracetic acid extracted with ether or other solvent.
